Fan Shroud Colors: Factory Photos

October 31, 2010 | Research & Identification
Return to article on Fan Shroud Colors.

Bill Romano: I took these photos at the Porsche factory in 1962 and 1963. They show rows of engines awaiting installation. There are both gloss black and gloss grey fan covers on engines with Zeniths and I guess these were Normals and Supers. Then there are S90's with Solex carbs that appear to have the same color fan covers as the supers (gloss grey). The grey ones could be silver I guess but they look grey in my photos; they are certainly not white but I can't tell if they're exactly the same shade as the Supers.

We talk about silver shrouds starting with T2's 1958.
What color silver? Darker? lighter? I am redoing my shroud for my 59 Super. Need to know silver color..
Help. Ken Ballard

Looks like the valve covers don't have vents.
Is that possible?

Starting September 1, 1957, 1600 and 1500GS fan shrouds were BLACK, 1600-S fan shrouds were SILVER GREY. Previously all fan shrouds were BLACK. This pertains to engines beginning with serial numbers: 1600 P-67 001, and 1600-S P-81 201. Source: Factory Service Bulletin #14/57, dated September 1, 1957.
