1964 Porsche 356C Coupe Current Condition: Extremely Original • VIN: 218110 • Engine Number: 713640 (original) • Transmission Number: 78692 (original) • Delivery Date: 5/19/1964 • Color: Bali Blue – special order – (original color) • Interior: Fawn (tan) – all original interior • Odometer: 75,051 miles (extensive documentation) • Current Home: Pinehurst, NC General Information If you found yourself attracted to the beautiful Bali Blue coupe at Luftgekuhlt on the cover of this month's Registry magazine, then here is your opportunity. Porsche #218110 has had 3 owners in over 55 years. The original owner accepted European delivery in May of 1964 and kept the car for 4 years before turning it over to Ted Rogers in 1968. Bali Blue was Ted’s sweetheart for the next 36 years until he was no longer able to drive. The current owner has cared for Bali Blue for the past 15 years. The car resided in California for the first 20 years of its life. In 1988 the car moved to Baltimore with its owner where it was used infrequently and only in nice weather – the rest of the time tucked away in the garage. The receipt for tires in 1988 shows the mileage at 58,000. It has been garaged and driven only 17,000 miles over the next 30 years. It was, however, kept running on a regular basis all during this period. Current mileage is 75,600 miles. The body is as solid and original as you can find. No metal has been replaced on this car. It has excellent factory gaps: hood, engine, and both doors. Two flaws, a door ding (easily removed but I do not have a dent wizard nearby) and a small rust spot on the driver’s door (has not changed in 15 years). Both are shown in the photos. According to the records, 218110 received some repaint in the original color during 1985 in Redwood City, CA. It takes a close inspection to even realize the car was repainted. There are no signs of collision damage/repair and it is unknown why the car was repainted except perhaps some dulling of the shine after 20 years. The 1985 paint looks very good today. According to the records, Mr. Rogers located the best Porsche mechanic he could find in California at the time and had them perform a professional rebuild at 47,612 miles. But to this day, the engine exterior has never been restored. It retains original paint and stickers with the exception of a new coil. The only modifications are easily reversable safety and performance upgrades developed by long standing members of the 356 community. They would include Vic Skirmants Street Camber Regulator, John Willhoit’s 17.5mm sway bar, Dual Master Cylinder kit from Zim’s Autotechnik, headlight and starter relays from Joe Leoni, LED Headlights, brake lights from CU Layer, and dash lights from Jules Dielen. Mechanically the car is in top notch shape. An “anything needed” service was completed in July 2018 at Wills Werks in Fairfax, VA. A removal and reseal of the engine, transmission rebuild, new clutch, balanced flywheel, new solid axle boots and all needed seals, new brake lines along with flush, new Swepco gear oil, as well as other minor miscellaneous items. The brake calipers were recently rebuilt by PMB. Approximately 10 years ago, the carburetors were rebuilt at Carburetor Rescue and the distributor rebuilt by Ab Tiedeman. The engine has never been detailed by choice. It has no leaks and runs and drives as it came from the factory. Bali Blue has all of the original interior in great shape – seats, door panels, headliner, etc. The carpet is still original. The dash and visors are original and in great shape. It has headrests, working Blaupunkt radio, Hella 128 fog lights, working clock, original bakelite steering wheel with deluxe horn ring, the original spare wheel and tire, even the original tire strap, and five 4 1/2” wheels dated 5/64 and a second set of 5 1/2” chrome wheels used for everyday driving. As a result of participation in various events, Bali Blue has received the following acknowledgements: August 2013 – Feature Article in the Pinehurst Magazine in preparation of the Pinehurst Concours October 2013 – Awarded Best in Show at the Porsche Car Meetup as part of the NC Museum of Art – Porsche By Design Show. Approximately 200 cars participated in the Meetup 2015 Best in Class & Best in Show Carolinas Region PCA SommerFest 2015 – Used as the feature car in the billboard advertisement for the 2016 Pinehurst Concours 2016 – Chosen as a display car for an Advance Auto corporate gathering inside the Pinehurst Hotel November 2016 – Stitch Golf Advertising Campaign. Used in magazines and print media May 2016 – Fairway Club Owner’s Choice Award at the Pinehurst Concours. Approximately 200 cars participating November 2016 – Best in Class at Charlotte Concours Documentation included in the sale is about as extensive as can be found including the Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche, the original Kardex from the factory, the original owner’s manual, factory workshop manuals, the original delivery inspection tag for this car, every dealer brochure and piece of marketing literature from 1964, magazines and articles from 1964, the original jack and tool kit (the tool kit is excellent and in a rare heavy deluxe bag in blue), original radio manuals, original antenna keys and brochure, even a factory bottle of Bali Blue touch up paint, and too many other items to list. According to the Kardex, this car was heavily optioned from the factory. In addition, it now has other dealer installed options such as the Blaupunkt radio and speakers, very rare inside/outside thermometer, oil pressure and amp meter gauges, original luggage straps for the interior, and leather safety hood straps for the hood. It is difficult to find highly original cars for price comparison. The price was determined using price guides including Excellence and Hagerty as well as market appraisal from members who know the car. Asking price is Hagerty #2 and this car was evaluated as a 2+. The current Excellence value is quite a bit higher than the asking price. There is considerable additional value in the options and extras included.
