My originals which I have had for a long time have the stamp on the short side. Jim is correct. Also, do the repros have ivory plastic with the mouse holes?

Steve

No one has bothered to put the "mouse holes" in their repros that I am aware of. It is a very important feature when determining originality. I, too, believe that the plastic was not white but a shade of ivory.

Thanks for this discussion. I had always considered the mirrors on my 60 Cab to be original. In fact, many have told me so. But according to discussion here, they are repros? In my case, if so, they must have been put on the car in the early 70's (conversations and photos from previous [second] owner seem to confirm that these mirrors came on the car when they acquired it from the original owner)

Your mirrors are, indeed, reproductions. The early reproductions used the wrong "Made in Germany" logo. The logo that was used was more like the logo on later Durant mirrors.

This could be a longer story but I'll shorten it up.

Back in 1969 I started importing Durant and Aero mirrors from the German manufacturer, Mall KG in Markgroningen. Later, about 1973, at Stoddard Imported Cars we visited the manufacturer and ordered more mirrors. I recall we saw samples with the 3-star logo in both positions. We thought it looked better on the long side so they made them that way for us. We sold several hundred.

Now to modern times, there have been at least three repros made no doubt fueled by the kit car industry. A couple of those repros are junk in terms of shape, plating and the stamping of the 3-star logo. We believe our latest reproduction is the best out there regardless of the location of the logo. Sorry, I don't know about any "mouse holes" in the plastic glass surround.

I want to be humble to say: As with many parts these days, the choice can be finding an old original piece at a swap, taking it apart, repairing dents, getting the components re-chromed and putting all back together and, perhaps, you'll have a perfect $500. mirror. Or, you can purchase a nice reproduction for $78. from Stoddard NLA, LLC.

I just brought up this old post because I have a Durant in a box with my car and the line up for holes in the door from the underside seems more like an Aero fits there. The door is original with the right post numbers. Before I "DRILL", I thought I would see what was the prevailing opinion. In my search, I also found an original black and white from DERWHITE in my files and sure enough, he shows in that picture labeled 356 T6, an AERO with the Made in Germany on the larger side not the smaller side. I hate to dredge up old feelings but it seems that even though the catalogues from the replacement suppliers all show the Aero for up to T5 and then the Durant, Porsche was doing what Porsche has done to me for all seven of my Porsches in my life........................use up the old stuff first and switch over to the newer stuff when the old is gone. With my 1962 early T6 B, it seems like no "sin" to put on an Aero with a stamping on the big side. Any comments?

No they don't have the ivory plastic, but they match these pictures as far as where they are "stamped". http://derwhites356literature.com/LittleKnownFacts.html
Look at the pix with "the difference between T5 and T6" and sure enough their first T6's in the promo have Aero's.

By the way about 3/4 of the way down on the old promo pix, there you see the ivory plastic you are talking about as well as the stamping on the large side.
