Hi,
I have resarched and perused articles about the correct funtioning of the parking lights (for Euro and US options) but I cannot find anywhere the details as t the correct operation;

wich of the following would be correct?,

a) Both parking lights light up when pulling the light lever
b) Circuit is "active" once the the lever is pulled but lights are not on until the blinker lever is either turned up (for right side) or down (for left side)

I seem to remember the latter being the right option because it would depend on what side of the street one would park.... but the is no info on it anywhere (that I can find...)..

Your help will, as always, be very appreciated...

Helmuth,

First, I assume you're talking about the combination parking
lights/turn signal lights. Quoting from the 1/63 T-6 Owner's
Manual:

"The light switch controls the head and tail lights as well as
the instrument lighting.......By pulling the switch to the first
stop, the parking lights light."

There's no mention of being able to light just one "parking
light" left side or right side. I have a Euro spec 65 356-C
and the parking lights work as described in the T-6 manual.

My '67 911S lights the parking lights, on one side or the other, while parked, light switch off, by placing the turn signal lever to the left or right position. Yes, this was for parking along the side of the street. Does a 356 do that? I haven't done that with the 911 in so long that I am not sure that I am even correct about that.

I don't know about my 356 since I still am not restored to that point, but I think what he is talking about is the "feature" which I have seen in my Deutsche Autos (1971-2006) over the years where you push down the turn signal even when everything is turned off and the parking light on that side lights up as a "parking light" which is the legal thing to do when double parking in Europe. I don't know if 356 does that yet.

Thank you all...

I cannot recall if I read or heard about this function being available to the 356 and since I am trying to bring the car to "original" specs I stumbled upon this and don't know if there are any 356's out there that have this feature... I do know that the 911's and the early Mercedes do have this feture enabled but would like to hear your recommendation for the correct setting. The wiring diagram does not specify anything about it nor does the service manuals... The only indication is, as Charlie mentioned, that the parking lights turn on when the switch is pulled....

Helmuth,

I'm aware that certain European cars have this feature, and perhaps later Porsches also have it. I've never seen it in a 356 B or C, but that doesn't mean some don't have it. Just have never seen a reference to it. When I lived in Germany for three years in the early 1970's, it was common to see cars parked along the streets with one parking light on (front and rear).

............at night, of course!

I've never heard of this on a 356.

Mine works as described in the manual, same as Charlie's. It's a '64 Euro spec.

Charlie... You are right!.. I've seen them in dimly ( and not so dimly) lit streets in Europe (mostly at night .! :) ).
Thank you all again for your input and time.. I'll set them up as per your own experience and cars...
All the best..
Helmuth

Yes. It was a feature on my 1971 914, 1976 914, 1976 924, 1987 924S, 1989 951, 1998 Boxster, 2006 Boxster, 1999 MB, 2002 MB and 2004 MB. I assume it was a Euro requirement at some point in time.
