Hi folks,

I could not resist to purchase a set of Bosch early yellow lenses (French style) that were available at the list.

They are brand new and I thought about giving some flavor to my Coupe. The lenses are pure NOS, but when I got my eyes at it I see more yellow than I wished…

The car looks apart from everything else on the street… at day or at night…

I would like to hear some opinions on the look and personal preferences. Yellow or white driving lights?

Many thanks in advance for the votes and comments!!

Freddy,

I like the yellow headlight look. When I was in Germany in the service in the early 70's we took several trips to France. Yellow headlights were very common there. I decided to try the "yellow headlight" look on my red 356-C. Attached is a picture of the result. Note only the headlight bulb is yellow, the outer glass is clear white. I used standard white sealed beam headlight bulbs and sprayed them with yellow glass stain. Came out perfect. Yellow headlights are illegal in Arizona, so haven't but them on yet. But I will, if only to see how long I can get away with it.

Personally Freddy, I like them and have been trying to figure out how to convert my xenon headlamps on my 997 (w/o putting yellow film on the outside of the lenses).

On my 356, I converted over to H-4's and actually found a company online that sells yellow balloon clip on bulbs for H-4 lamps. You have a clear lense, clear housing but when you switch on the headlamps they are yellow.

See attached photo.

Freddy, I think that when we deal with our loved old 356s we have to really choose what we like more, our hobby is probably one of the very few things where we have a certain freedom left.
In my opinion, maybe just because I am Italian, yellow lights on a 356 are a capital sin. In france they used them because they offer a slightly better service with fog, yellow light has a longer wavelength, so it penetrates better the mist.
But the French have always been in competition with the Germans, they imprisoned Ferdinand after WWII and they did forbid the use of "901" to Porsche as Peugeot patendet all 3 digits brands with a zero in the middle. So if you really want to keep the faith, you go for white lights. With the only exception of the Marchal fog lights that are a nice option.
356s are a typical result of the German way of thinking (you may like it or not) and the yellow lights are a sort of French contamination.

Freddy,

Maybe it is just the digital photos but in all my years with Porsche and things-Porsche I have never seen (yellow) lights that dark and in most all cases it is only the bulb that is yellow. We have had our share of Sonauto-delivery, French ex-pat cars with none that dark. I freely admit that I can always learn  They appear almost amber in the photos. Below illustrates the yellow bulb effect in the "Operation Caracas" 550 Spyder. The bulbs are the same as equiped before we began any restoration from original.

Cheers friend

It appears that Alex Woa is the source for these lenses.

Hi Tim,
You are correct. Alex Woa is the source... And I agree that they are almost amber... After a week with them installed I am thinking about replacing them back to the normal white ones... The lenses look period correct but brand new... Anyone else is using these lenses?

They look nice at night, but not so nice during the day…. On the weekend I will get back to the white lenses…
And I will try to find some yellow bulbs for the car.
Thanks for the votes and comments!

Freddy
i also bought a pair .. just to see what they would look like on my cab and because i have never seen them before .. i have to say i like the look better than the yellow bulb look..
I still think the regular bosh clear lens look best.

The yellow bulb in my opinion is to banana yellow and doesn't look period correct even though they are period osram bulbs..

i think the yellow /amber lens look best hanging on the wall in my office ..
did you notice the k#s are the same as the clear lenses K21008
