I'm thinking about shipping my 356 from Kansas City to southern California around the middle of August and have it come back a couple of months later. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,
I have used Horseless Carriage and they were good.

I have also used Intercity and they were superb.

There are independent guys that may work cheaper but the often can't adhere to a strict schedule. I just call Intercity and have zero worries.

Enjoy sunny CA!
Cliff

I'm biased, because Intercity is a family business headquartered here in Massachusetts, but I've used them for more than 15 years and they have never disappointed.

Most of the companies you find on the internet are brokers, with no trucks of their own, they just put the pickup on Central Dispatch and take the cheapest person who picks up, this can lead to problems. If you can go with a known company or a broker who will back up damages you are better off. I use a broker for everything I can't pick up TSAT www.carmover.net 518-842-9770, ask for Sue, tell her I sent you. She usually gives Porsche buddies better rates.

One company I can tell you NOT TO USE is Express Auto http://www.theexpressauto.com/

They have a neat trick where they give you the lowest quote, you give them a deposit, they than have 6 weeks to try to get your car picked up, if not they hit you up for more money, while they hold your $$$ hostage. I used them once and it was a miserable experience.

Ditto with Intercity. Have used them three times- highly professional people. Probably not unique to them, once the car is picked up, delivery date can be within a range of plus or minus a few days to a week or two, usually minus. Also realize that "Car Week" in Monterey is the 2nd week of August- don't know how this will affect their scheduling dispatching.

Steve,

Intercity and Passport Transport are my favorite. Both very professional.

I and a half dozen Porsche friends have used DeMoise with fantastic results, absolutely great people. They have their own trucks and provide outstanding and careful service. www.demoise.com

I worked down the street from Reliable Auto Transport and going to lunch would always look at the trucks to see what they were carrying. Reliable does a lot of transport for museums and auto factories and unusual, expensive cars were common on the trucks. I got to see manufacturer prototypes, a Type 57 Bugatti, Gull Wing Mercedes, etc. They did a good, professional job with my 356 from California to Washington.

I recently sold a VW Pickup to a fellow in Maryland. It was only a $6000 vehicle so he didn't want to spend $1500+ to ship it from Oregon. He ended up using www.uship.com and paid $800.
Interesting concept; you post what you need shipped and independent haulers bid until the deadline you set for the job. There was actually another guy that bid $750, but the fellow he chose had much better feedback (you leave feedback after the item is delivered). What amazed me was that he had the car in less than 5 days at that price and was very pleased with the whole process.

I am not sure if I would use them for a really valuable car, but I plan to try them on my next $25,000 car.

I have some horror stories, like the time the trucker balled up a Pre-A, because he was talking on his phone. He wasn't too worried about it, I also watched him ram a 911 into a Surburu one time, same guy, really. I had a customer who used him over and over, I was never sure why.
