Both of those will work but are, in no way, 356A shift knobs.

Gary is not answering his emails because Brezelwerks is closed for maintenance and re-tooling. Here is a note from a Brezelwerk's ad on TheSamba: "PLEASE NOTE - We are closed for maintenance and new product development from May 1 - Aug 31, and taking new orders again on Sept 1, thank you!"

Hold onto your lugnuts! There is a guy in the Netherlands that is in the process of coming out with the 'A' knob(56-59). I got the other dash knobs from him(complete set-including radio) and they are awesome! He runs an ad on the Samba site.

hi mark-off the top of my head i found him by typing in '356 knob' and scroll down till you see the knob pictures-his name is mike. the stuff is so good it is used by the porsche museum for the cars they have on display-good enough for me! i was blown away at the quality. you'll love 'em-get the full set. let him know you also want the shift knob he is coming out with.
