Can anyone tell me, or send a pic, about the differences between a European and a US heater box? A mechanic working on our new (old) C engine says it has 912 heater boxes on it, but the engine has a shroud on it with the provision for the duct on the right side (although it's covered up) that you see on Euro motors. The engine is 750 miles away, but I'm thinking that maybe he has misidentified a Euro heater box, thinking it's a 912 type.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi Ned,

Here are two examples. The two pictures were "borrowed" from the web. The 912 box from our own Vince Capaletti's current ad in our classifieds, and the euro boxes from the Stoddard website. Apologies to all!!

The 912 is much closer to the US version than the Euro.

Thanks Sebastian. I think what we have is 912 flapper boxes with 912 J-tubes. The Euro heater boxes are obviously much different from 356/912 flapper boxes. The mechanic was right. I think I'm straightened out now.

Thanks again.

Note: there are also 356 European heat exchangers, and 912 European heat exchangers. The big difference is the snout that goes over the axle, 912 being smaller than the 356. Have the guy take a picture and we can tell you what's what.

The USA heater box (or J-pipe) is the same for the 356 and 912, except the added cable tubing on the 912 box.

The same main heater box section is used on the 356 and 912, except the 356 box having the 60mm snouts over the axle tubes and the 20mm nipple(s) for the carb pre-heat hose(s);
the 912 boxes lack the snouts and the nipples, but they can be used on the 356 (and adding the nipples if desired)--it makes it easy to R & R the engine.

I had a compatibility issue with the different diameters between the euro heater boxes, flapper box, ducting and longitudinal. PIA!

The euro heater requires a two piece hose (cardboard flex) from NLA which has two different ID's. Part No: 644 211 091 07. If I read your post correctly
