Hello to all and Happy New Year.

I am advocating a new 4-cam & Carrera "Category" to be added to the Registry Talk Forum.

Below are some links to other (call it modified) category discussions taking place. Perhaps besides going to a "Poll' to see if there is member interest that way, just some responding to this subject line would prove interesting...or not.

Thanks for reading this...and below are the links I mentioned above:

Regarding - Post subject: Engine Type 547/1 Serial P90009

http://porsche356registry.org/356talk/1/28962.html

FYI -

There has to be 4 or 5 (maybe more) different 4-cam motor, Furhmann, Carrera and Spyder discussions going on now tied to this one thread that Jack Walter simply began on the above Subject line.

I posted to the main web-site menu "Forum and Site Q&A" requesting that there be a new "4-Cam & Carrera" Forum Category:

http://porsche356registry.org/356talk/15/28999.html

If we were to have this added to the Talk Forum, I think it would add a lot of interest, participation and learning to many people. There seems to be a misconception and/or other underlying strange distance-disregard about 4-cam related cars. It shouldn't be that way.

There is currently an "Outlaw Corner" Forum category. It was the Porsche Factory 4-cam cars and Carrera's that were the first original "Outlaws". Let everyone enjoy reading and learning more about all of Porsche's models. You don't have to own one or be a tech-mechanic to appreciate what they are.

Thanks for reading (again) about my interest to see this happen.

Michael Doyle

I second the motion - there's a lot of interest in these wonderful pieces of mechanical art.

Anything I can do to help - I'll pitch in.

I would like to see a 4-cam & Carrera category! I have been searching for 4 cam info the last few days and it's hard to find with the current configuration....

I would like it too. However it doesn't matter where someone posts questions or info I will read it because I read all the posts in all the sub forum categories. I guess I am addicted to the forum. There I said it.

X2, I love reading and learning. I vote yes on a separate section, especially if the number of posts on 4 cams increases.

And Michael, I think you "get it", thanks for taking the initiative to put the idea out there.

From the original Jack Walter Subject line: Engine Type 547/1 Serial P90009

Bill Block wrote:
BLOCKS BOOKS now has in stock Hans Mezger's autobiography PORSCHE & ME. Mezgar redid the calculations on the Fuhrmann motor -- over 15,000 calculations, by hand for the new cam shafts. Incidentally, Jorus' the never before seen photograph with Ferry porsche and the early 547 motor is present but backwards. $65.00 (list $79.95) + $4.00 shipping.

Dear Bill,

I think you are trying to capitalize...financially (blantantly) on the fact that there "Does" need to be a new "4-cam & Carrera " Forum category on this web-site. I welcome your advertisement above, as you further the cause in your own way. But c'mon...this current category is Jack Walter's subject line, about His Car & His Motor. NOT the BOOK you are trying to SELL.

And using Joris Koning (as an innocent cover) I don't think will work well with with Joris, me...or the rest of us.

By example, if you scroll through the Forum Menu category of "Authenticity Corner", a simple request by Joris on a 4-cam - Carrera motor question was about a basic "decal" on the Fan shroud. But really...can I please ask you: Where should that question really have been asked...?

To Me...Answer: A "4-cam & Carrera " Forum category.

Might you perhaps be interested in endorsing it...or not? (Again..to me) this is part of the misconception on the psuedo-thinking that there is an "elitist" group associated to 4-cam cars and 356 Carrera's. Oh, you can't talk to "them" only on the side...but go ahead, make an Outlaw into a Carrera, and to try and be something that Porsche did a long, long time ago...but get this...."that is very-very cool". "Specials"..."Outlaws" - "HOTRODS"...that's all great creativity. And that is what "Walter Glockler" was all about (and me too). If it wasn't for him...there (perhaps) would never have been a Porsche 550 Spyder, an RSK, an RS 60...a 904, a 917..?

And if I may please ask, what picture is on the Cover of the Nov-Dec 356 Registry magazine? ...the Bruce Sweetman picture of early Porsche 550 Spyder's at the Porsche Race Car Classsic (PRCC...thank's to Steve Heinrichs). Are there 4-cam motors involved here...?

What's the 356 Registry doing here..? With those non-356 Spyders on the Cover..? (how dare Gordon Maltby do That!) btw...this is tongue in cheek.

And the money side on this subject matter leaves a lot to question...if it's good for that one individual, then it's Ok. But as a whole..."OH NO" that's an elitist group (don't go there). Geez, let's try and be real, cooperative, and have fun this year.

How about trying this...DO NOT BE AFRAID.

Michael Doyle

No fear here Michael, I'm for it.
I agree the four cam mystique can be a bit daunting for the rest of us. The numbers involved are staggering and most people can only dream. But I think that's what made Jack's post so interesting as it seems to have sparked something. Jack seems like a regular guy, who happened to have bought a really neat car years ago,..and incidentaly got a fairly significant engine to go with it back in 73 without even knowing it (!) Old school four cam.
I don't know Jack (pun?...intended) but I think it's cool he's talking about his holed piston, and posting pictures, just like some B normal owner slogging through similar circumstances. (Nothing against B Normal owners, ha ha) Most would agree that four cams are beautiful works of art, but the money involved there sometimes makes for a disconnect. I'd love to see his thread follow through like a project build page by page all the way to the finish. That'd be a cool one for the "Four Cam Forum".

I agree to ad the 4-cam category to the forum.
It is hard to find good stuff on the net.
Almost as hard as the engines and its pieces... :?

Fully support and agree with Michael's suggestion for a Four Cam Forum. It would be very nice to discover more about these mechanical jewels and share issues about them. As more four cam's surface into use again I feel it would be a real bonus for four cam owners as well as fellow 356 enthusiasts.

I'll support Michael' suggestion also. And double ditto on Steve H's comments above. I'll never own a 4-cam. Lucky enough just to have acquired a couple of pushrod car basket cases before gold fever struck the faithful. But the 4 cams are just fascinating to read about. And that includes all the technical minutiae, like how the oil lines exited the case. Indispensable info for a fortunate few, delightful entertainment for the rest of us.
Take care,
DG

I think we should document as much about the 4-cam engines as possible. One thing I learned when doing the story on 4-cam guru Gerry McCarthy was that there is a lot of knowledge out there that has never been fully tapped, but the clock is ticking. Think about it, of the original and only Factory Carrera School how many of those guys can we talk to, Lake Underwood, Bob Holbert? Gerry we can talk to and should at every opportunity.
Once the knowledge is gone, it's gone. We should talk and talk some more!

There is more knowledge about 4 cams than there ever will be. From a purely historical and technical standpoint, it would be great to have it all in one place instead of searching through the numerous forums. I second the motion ( or fifth or sixth the motion, whatever we're up to now).

I heartily endorse a 4-cam category! Suggest two sub catagories - general information and listings of cars - Carreras (356), 500 Series Spyders, Abarths.
Great idea!
