Here's an example if the description is accurate.

David -
Per my original `65C engine, the valve covers are white cad plated, while the bails are black. Let me know off-line if you desire a photo.

For what it is worth, I am in agreement with Wil.

Based on the ebay picture yellow zinc would be pretty close.

Replacement parts are often not as the original as the supplier adopts different materials and so on. The covers above appear to be more correct for a 912 which at least in the later years of production were all yellow cad plated; I don't think any 912s had a breather. Didn't the C cars have the breather with the moving ball - the SCs did at any rate in my limited experience. My covers had traces of silver cad and that's how I refinished them.

When the crankcase breather was introduced, the vented covers went away. That doesn't mean that some previous owner didn't install them. It just means that I doubt if any Cs or SCs came from Porsche with vented covers; at least not in the States.

I have found that it is very hard to tell the difference between silver cad and zinc on pieces, especially when aged. Over the years I have had hardware tested to make sure that I picked the right plating. Has anybody ever tested a valve cover? I have found that often pieces are actually zinc and not cad. My experience is however limited to A cars.

The only engines I have are both 912's and they were both yellow in color so they were related on Yelow Zinc.

Paul, how can you be sure they are cad just by looking at the picture?

Fair question Joris. Perhaps not. But, the color looks like the other parts in the picture that we know are cad I plated- like the coil bracket.

I'll just state this and drop out: No original 356 I've ever seen had and yellow cad plating on the valve covers.

I will also stand corrected - while I'm sure my covers were silver colored, whether cad or zinc, I don't know. My 64 SC (160595) does have the vents, but who knows if they're original. It was a Germany delivered car bought slightly used by a US serviceman and brought back to the US when his tour ended. The motor number is 821067.
Porsche had quite a few different specs - C and SC, US, with the flapper heaters, Euro with the 'fresh' air heater, Italian with different wire harness for the tail light assy, right hand drive to name a few.
BTW, does anyone know why some SC motor numbers start with 81xxxx and others 82xxxx?

Not sure about the specifics of this (when, what was affected, etc.) but is my understanding that the DIN spec relating to CAD plating changed in the '64/'65 timeframe going from the silver CAD to the yellow CAD as the standard treatment when the part specification called for such plating. From what I have been lead to believe by people who were paying attention 'back in the day', this change occured in the latter part of C/SC production and was in effect by the time 911/912 production began to ramp up in '65. Hence, there were some late C/SC cars that would have had yellow CAD finishes on parts which called for the plated treatment. I have observed that NOS parts from that period usually have yellow CAD where plating was done but most NOS parts were actually produced as replacement stock after 356 production ended.
Just some food for thought.

Thanks very much for the input
Knowing I have a late production 65 , then I assume I should move ahead with Cad plating (yellow/gold) .
Would the Bails then be black Cad finish

I have done a little Cad plating on my own , so willing to take a shot at a DIY project
And will post results

any pics of a concours set of covers would be appreciated

Thanks again for the opinions
