Gang,

I am working on some antenna research. If anybody has an early car 50-52 with a antenna they feel is original to the car I would love to see some pictures.

TIA,

Joris

Hi Joris, I think you have seen my Feb 53 orginal Hirschmann. If it fits your criteria, let me know and I can send detailed pics.

I have seen some original cars with Hirshmann black tip (not red not blue) antenna mounted on the center behind the hood where the split winshields meet and bended to the back with a suport on the roof above the windshield, I think I have one or two B/W picture, will look.

I have one of the antennas that Omar speaks of that mounts in the middle. It is brand new in the box it has a red jewel tip on it. It was a very, very rare option. Its for sale if anyone is interested.

Guys, thanks for the help. Cowl mounted antenna's were indeed seen on some of the splt windows. However, The classic location as also seen on the later 356's seems to have been predominantly used. The Hirschmann antenna's mounted in this location carried both black and red tips and differed a lot from those used on later cars.

The antenna's I am referring to can be seen on the former Stuart Zeh 1950 cabriolet

And another from a picture provided by Charlie. This one is interesting in that the car appears to be post 52 but still has the early style Hirschmann

The aluminum windshield trim did come out in late 1952. Would have to see the bumpers to determine more.

Good point Vic. I was looking at the wipers and they are the later style. However they could have offcourse been changed over the years.

Joris,
This is the antenna from my unrestored '51. Its not a Hirshmann.

Hope this helps,
Dave.

Dave,

It actually looks very very similar to the early Hirschmann. Any chance you can take better pictures?

Thanks,

Joris

Location: California's Central Coast, not quite New Zealand... but close
There was also a brand called WISI that made black plastic tipped antenna's. (similar to the red tips) One of these came with the pile of parts I got from Steve Herron with my old Continental. Victor Miles said it was correct for that era. It's base was svelter than the Hirschman's. I don't know when they started using them or stopped. no super close up photo's sorry. (the mirror is a Hella Spotlight mirror. you turn the mirror to switch on the light. Usually these were on pre 67 VW bus ambulances... they were on a lot of Horsch, Daimler, Mercedes coachbuilts... and often on older BMW motorcycles. They are pretty rare on 356's as the 356 mount base is almost impossible to find.)
