356C Bosch regulator.

My regulator will allow my voltage output to climb as high as 8V at sustained 4K rpms measured at the cigar lighter. It also can get bouncy at those levels, 7.8, then 7.4, then 8, then 7.6 and so on. Also, while it might be at 6.4 @ 2500, after spending time in the 7's at higher rpms, when back at 2500 it will start reading in the low 7's. I've tried to adjust the spring tension on the points to lower the upper limit to 7.5, per Joe Leoni's instructions, without much success. I've filed the points with a fine grit and blown them off. All the connections are clean and tight. Maybe I should check the brushes on the generator? Maybe I need a new regulator?

I thought Joe said that the small C regulators were not adjustable and that they cannot be set to limit current to 23 amps, which is what he favors on the big black 6V regulator (which is adjustable).
This prevents the generator from throwing solder when the battery charge is low and all the lights and accessories are running at night.

My friend, Jim Learmonth lost 3 generators in 3 years from this effect before Leoni clued him in and installed a big black voltage regulator on his 65C at the recent Sedona WCH.

I have also now replaced the small C regulator on my 65C coupe with the large black one.

John

We were having much trouble with the small silver 12 volt model on our '63 T6B. We finally decided to fit an electric model made by Bosch. If you a tempted to fit a 'non correct' earlier Black regulator, maybe a close to correct in size and silver electric model will prove less troublesome?
We have had zero issues since citing the new model...
(I am of course assuming there will be a 6 volt model?)

I'd like to put in an electronic 6V regulator, but have not found one. I came close, but it's a positive ground for British bikes.

Dave, by adjusting the stop that the spring rests on, the tension is adjusted on the points and regulates the maximum voltage. I'm not aware of an adjustment, and am not trying to adjust amps. Just trying to limit my top voltage to 7.2 ish and not boil the battery.

This is the regulator I referred to above.

It is not just the battery you have to worry about, the generator will over heat and throw solder.
