I put up the top on my ConvD the other day and the passenger side top frame hinge above the middle of the window broke. It is a clean break where the pivot tabs attach to the top frame. I am sure this has happened before and I wonder what others have done.

It would seem the best thing to do would be to remove the top and frame from the car, protect the canvas top from damage, clean the metal and weld it back together. Afterward I could touch up the paint and be on my way.

Any other suggestions or refinements on methods would be appreciated. I wonder if brazing would be strong enough?

Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem on my D frame 2 years ago. A magnet confirmed it was steel and a weld and touch up worked wonders. Protect the top very carefully.

A well prepped and cleaned TIG weld will produce almost no spatter and confine the heat to a small area. Brazing is a mess and requires heating up a much larger area. You might be able to do it on the car. Try not to ground through any pivots or hinges. J
