Hello all, I have a 58 speedster which recently was noted to have significant rust in the gas tank interior. The restoration company where I got the car from, took the tank back and boiled away the rust and they said they treated it to new exterior black paint and a "phosphate coating" inside.
It does look to be bare steel inside though and I was told that I should not try to seal the inside with anything else because the original cars never had a sealant inside.
Has anyone had problems with a rusty tank and did you just remove the rust and leave the inside steel bare? Thanks for your help!
Vince.

Vincent,

After a tank has been "boiled out", some of them require repairs, then they should be coated on the inside, careful not to seal off the vent hole. After that, they would be painted black.

It seems to me that if your tank is just bare metal inside, as soon as any condensation takes place, corrosion will follow.

I am not sure what to call the stuff our tanks are coated with, but it is a reddish color that works real good. I have also observed a tan colored coating used by some, but it does not adhere very well to some areas and has caused blockage in the fuel lines/jets.

Give Pacific Radiator in Glendale, CA a call, they are the ones that do all my tanks. Darrin Gomez is the owner, at 818-241-5132.

You asked,

Bob

Vincent, Might check in the registry classifieds around 7/31/12 Mike Dejonge had new reproduction A/B fuel tanks for sale I think he was asking $375.00 for them plus shipping. He is in Canada. I just had a tank a year age cleaned, repaired and sealed and it cost me just over $450.00. I haven't had any problems with it but I'm in Oregon where I can buy non-ethanol fuel, if I was to start using ethanol fuel I think I would buy one of Mike's tanks as I've heard that it is real hard to get a tank sealer to with stand the ethanol fuel. I check my tank before every fill up to make sure none of the sealer is starting to let go. I'm considering oredering one of Mike's tanks this winter just in case. I don't like the idea of getting crude in my fuel system. That's my thoughts hope this helps and good luck. George

Hirsh tank sealant is the one which resists any fuel problems causing eventual rust.
You must follow its directions for curing--and stand 'up-wind' and away from the neiborhood when adding it to the tank; about a 24hr. cure and moving air if possible.
I/we also used Stoddard's for years w/o problems. (don't know their supplier?)
